Energy-saving Testing of Battery Cells

27 May 2011 - FuelCon introduces the new battery tester TrueData-EPCD which combines all features of a multi-channel charge / discharge unit with a new and innovative concept for minimizing energy consumption through so-called EPCD technology. The acronym EPCD thereby stands for Energy-Pump-Charging-Discharging.

Conventional methods allow energy feedback into existing grids. Due to efficiency losses this is technically and economically worthwhile only for channel power higher than 20 kW. The EPCD technology developed by FuelCon takes advantage from the fact, that during test field operation charge and discharge cycles are typically performed at the same time.

Based on an energy pump method it allows transferring discharge energy of one channel to all other channels that are simultaneous in charge mode. That means, the energy will be “pumped” from battery to battery. If the other channels are not in charge mode at the same time, discharge energy will be saved in an intermediate circuit and can be released again if required. The concept enables enormous energy cost savings with reduction of the test station operating costs up to 80%. Thus, FuelCon has set new standards for characterizing batteries in test fields.

Generally, the TrueData-EPCD is designed for applications in the lower power range. With a resolution of 24 Bit, maximum currents of 5A or 25 A and voltages up to 6V are adjustable, depending on the model. This allows achieving a compact test field with many channels including several options like test chambers or closed cabinets. In addition, the test system enables performance of both, flexible self-defined load cycles as well as standard cycles like for example according to FreedomCar procedure. A sophisticated alarm concept ensures the test station is in a safe state at any time.

FuelCon will present the TrueData-EPCD at the upcoming AABC Europe 2011 conference and exhibition from June 6th to 10th in Mainz (Germany).
