Tri-Temp MEMS Gravity Handler for MEMS Devices

Microtec G Handler01 March 2016 - Microtec Fertigungs-GmbH (MICROTEC), a manufacturer of customer dedicated test handlers for the Semiconductor packaged device test market, announces successful installation of its customized MH250-EVO SP. The Gravity Handler is now processing engineering and qualification volumes of very small form factor MEMS packaged devices at a local Semiconductor fab in Germany.

The tiny light-wavelength sensor MEMS devices are getting stimulated during test via a sophisticated light transmission within the contact unit of the small package MICROTEC handler. The light source was developed by a local optical specialists company.

From the onset the project was a challenging interdisciplinary task among aps Solutions GmbH (commercial and service part, project lead), a local optical specialists company (optical stimulation, light signal transmission), MICROTEC (Gravity Handler design, contact unit design and mechanical interface definition and design) and customer (specification, testing environment definition, manufacturing parameters). One important key factor for this project was a short turn-around time from concept to installation at the customer’s site.

With a weight of only 6 Milligrams per package, singulation, transportation and sorting within a temperature range from -40°C up to 155°C was a challenge for using physical gravity to support movement of the devices within the handler. Due to MICROTEC’s excellent mechanical design these packages are processed with fairly high UPH values. All production parameters finally passed or exceeded customer’s expectations.

Dr.-Ing. Helmuth Heigl, Managing Director of MICROTEC said, “compared to other methods of handling Semiconductor packaged devices, the use of physical gravity is the most cost effective way of doing it. With more than 30 years of experience in the handler market and according our slogan “We Can Handle It”, we can provide flexible and customized solutions for a wide range of Semiconductor packages. In this case, we re-designed the existing MH250-EVO handler to sort such small and almost no-weight devices.”
